Local projects

What does it involve?

Local projects are the instrument through which CONAI acts at a local level to support the qualitative and quantitative development of separate collection for recycling in areas that are lagging behind. In these cases, CONAI is available to support local administrations, municipalities and municipal associations, from waste management planning to service start-up.

Local projects may include, for instance, planning at the level of the waste‑management area or sub-area, local analysis, improving roadside collection systems (proximity collection, expanding collection points, transitioning from heavy multi-material collection to light multi-material or mono-material collection, etc.), and the introduction or extension of door‑to‑door collection systems (possibly combined with the introduction of pay‑as‑you‑throw systems) within the collection area. Local projects may also target specific types of users other than residential users (e.g. schools, associations organising and managing events, sports facilities, tourist accommodation, commercial catering operators, etc.), or address specific local issues (e.g. high tourist flows), or be dedicated to implementing innovative separate collection systems (e.g. smart technologies and on‑demand systems).

Communication and awareness

Local projects may also support communication and awareness campaigns necessary to promote:

  • the introduction of new separate collection services
  • changes to existing ones

In such cases, CONAI determines the form and content of the communication campaign together with the requesting entity, and costs are shared 50/50. If the applicant has already assigned communication activities to a company selected through a public tender, CONAI may also co‑finance up to 50% of the total cost of the communication actions agreed and approved.
