CONAI Packaging Material Consortia

The seven Packaging Material Consortia manage the collection of separately collected packaging waste made of steel, aluminium, paper, wood, plastic, bioplastic and glass, processing and delivery to the final recycler, which may be a single plant or an accredited intermediary.

Each consortium is tasked with coordinating, organising and increasing:

  • collection of packaging waste delivered to the public service;
  • collection of packaging waste from industrial and commercial enterprises;
  • recycling and recovery of packaging waste;
  • promotion of research and technological innovation focused on recovery and recycling.

RICREA, the National Steel Packaging Consortium that, since 1997, has been responsible for ensuring the recycling of steel packaging such as tins, food cans, caps, drums, liquid containers, beverage cans and aerosols.

It is responsible for managing packaging originating from:

  • from separate waste collection carried out by citizens (municipal packaging)
  • from collection carried out at companies, shops, and production activities (industrial and commercial packaging).

CiAl, the National Aluminium Packaging Consortium, has been operating for over twenty years with the task of ensuring the recycling and recovery of aluminium packaging as beverage cans, but also food trays and tins (including pet‑food containers), tubes for creams, preserves or cosmetic and sanitary products, aerosol cans, caps and closures, and thin aluminium foil.

Comieco, National Cellulose-based Packaging Consortium founded in 1985 as a voluntary association and from 1997 part of CONAI System, operates with the task of ensuring the recycling and recovery of paper and board packaging.

  • from collection carried out at companies, shops, and production activities (industrial and commercial packaging).

Rilegno, the National Wooden Packaging Consortium, has been operating since 1997 with the task of organizing and ensuring, throughout Italy, the prevention, recovery, and recycling of post-consumer wooden packaging such as pallets, crates, boxes, cages, and cable reels.

Corepla, the National Plastic Packaging Consortium, that since 1997 operates with the task of ensuring the recycling and recovery of plastic packaging as water, milk, soft drink and oil bottles; bags and pouches for pasta, vegetables and frozen foods; containers for sauces, creams and yogurt; bottles and dispensers for detergents, soaps and cosmetics.

Biorepack, the National Compostable Bioplastic Packaging Consortium , founded in 2018 with the task of directing certified biodegradable and compostable plastic packaging compliant with the EN 13432 standard towards recycling, i.e. products made from polymeric raw materials that can be recycled together with organic waste and converted into compost.

It is responsible for managing packaging originating from:
