Labelling requirements updated in France and Spain
Pending the conclusion of the European infringement procedure regarding the labelling system for packaging management in France, and the entry into force of the system established by European Regulation 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste, the “info tri” label for household packaging and the “info-réemploi” label for professional packaging remain in force in France.
In Spain, the Ministry of Ecological and Demographic Transition (MITECO) has updated the interpretative note on the implementation and coordination of marking requirements between Spanish and European Union legislation. The objective of the document is to provide further operational clarifications on the application of Article 13 of Royal Decree 1055/2022, which entered into force on January 1, 2025, and to coordinate its application with the new Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR). The new note does not change the obligations already established by Spanish legislation, but introduces important interpretative clarifications and defines how these will have to coexist with future European harmonized labeling requirements.
Digitalized the, Green Dot, Der Grüne Punkt mark
European Regulation 2025/40 enters into force on August 12, 2026. Article 12, paragraph 9, stipulates that, by February 12, 2027, packaging included in an extended producer responsibility scheme may be identified throughout the territory in which that scheme or system applies. This identification is achieved only through a corresponding symbol in a QR code or other standardized, open, digital marking technology to indicate that the producer complies with its extended producer responsibility obligations. This symbol is clear and unambiguous and does not mislead consumers or users regarding the recyclability or reusability of the packaging.
The German Packaging Producers’ Extended Responsibility Organization, DerGrüne Punkt, has digitized the Green Dot® logo into Digit Dot and integrated it with a separate waste collection guide.
