Milan, 1 June 2017 – The Board of Directors of CONAI (Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi), appointed today Mr Giorgio Quagliuolo as CONAI’s new president for the next three years (2017-2019).
President of Unionplast and Vice President of Federazione Gomma Plastica (Plastic Rubber Federation). He was also President of COREPLA between 2007 and 2010, and between 2013 and 2016.
The Board of Directors also appointed Vice Presidents Mr Angelo Tortorelli, representing commercial users and distributors, and Mr Aurelio Ceresoli, representing the packaging users.
CONAI is a private consortium, set up in 1997 by national law, to ensure packaging
waste recycling across the country. Over the last 20 years, it has recycled 50 million
tons of packaging waste covering steel, aluminium, wood, paper, plastic and glass, and
increased the amount of recycled packaging waste, from around 190 thousand tons in 1998, to around 4 million tons in 2016. Within this period, CONAI’s work has prevented the establishment of around 130 medium-sized landfill sites.
In 2016, the amount of packaging waste sent to the recycling process was 67.1% of
the total packaging put on the market, which accounted for approximately 8.4 million
tons (+2.8% compared to 2015). This result exceeds the EU’s 2020 targets and already
fulfils the 2025 targets that are currently under discussion. When also considering the
amount of packaging waste sent to energy recovery processes, 78.2% of the total
packaging consumption in Italy has been diverted from landfill.
About CONAI CONAI is a not-for-profit, private consortium that brings together more than 900,000 packaging producers and users with the aim of meeting the legal recovery and recycling targets for packaging materials. The consortium aims at safeguarding the public interest by protecting the environment. In so doing, it applies the ‘shared responsibility’ principle amongst businesses, the public administration and citizens across packaging’s production, management and end-of-life treatment. CONAI steers the activity of other six consortiums that are responsible for recycling the following materials: Steel (Ricrea), Aluminum (Cial), Paper (Comieco), Wood (Rilegno), Plastic (Corepla), and Glass (Coreve).
